Set Yourself on Fire

How are you doing so far this New Year?

I hope that life is running smoothly and that you're finding time for yourself to rest so you feel motivated to hit the ground running with all your resolutions, words, and goals.

Our family has been ill for about a month with Mycoplasma Infection which brought us the lovely gift of acute bronchitis. I think we're on the mend now, despite feeling quite tired a lot.

In a way though, being sick has helped remind me to slow down and take some me time-outs. I'm not usually very good at those, but I try.

Maybe it was serendipitous finding my 2.5 words for 2013, ignite and glow, while sick and forced to take it easy.  This year, I plan to ignite and grow some major self-confidence and self -love, which means taking more time for myself and really setting solid, workable - yet flexible - goals.

Between my naps, this resting-up time has let me make a list of how I plan to ignite and glow this year.

The run down:
  • Read lots of books on self-care related issues (I downloaded about a year's worth of  ebooks while in Thailand over the holidays, despite my love of hold-in-your-hands-real books. Just can't get all the books I'd want while living in Myanmar.)
  • Take some e-courses on writing and on creativity; perhaps even some on business stuff!
  • Write a lot.
  • Start submitting work to agents, publishers, literary magazines, etc. depending on the genre.
  • Write 2-4 poems a month.
  • Finish a couple draft children's picture books.
  • Get regular freelance writing gigs.
  • Practice daily self-care.
  • Continue with the Inspiration Interview series. If you haven't seen the last one, you're missing out! Learn more about the inspirational Martina Clark who quit her day job for her soul job.
  • Be proud + celebrate my accomplishments.

I've already got the ball rolling on a few things:

What are some of the things that you are doing to show self-care as you head into 2013?

  1. I'm glad to hear you're on the mend! Sickness does put things in shocking perspective. Hmmm...I'm giving serious thoughts to your 2.5 words. :) My word is "commitment" this year. I'm looking forward to how this will manifest during the year. :) Have I told you lately I love coming here?! :) :)

  3. Becky what a wonderful year you have set up for yourself. The self-care part really jumped out at me... maybe because my focus is in big aimed at myself this year also. I didn't choose a word(s) for 2013... but for me it's the self-care and journey inward that I'm focussed on. Anything else comes after for me with less importance or attachments to this year. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE all that you are focussed on with your writing. I love reading your work and look forward to seeing what 2013 is going to be blessing you with. xo

    1. Hi Suzanne,
Yes, self-care is really jumping out at me, too. I think it's something I need to get better at, in all areas of my life, really. Maybe we can share self-care ideas!

Thank you so much for all of your ongoing support, Suzanne!

  4. Becky, so glad you're feeling better. I'm currently battling a wicked bout of asthma and I can appreciate how nice oxygen and healthy lungs are. :)

You are going to love The Gifts of Imperfection - one of my all time favorite books. How are you liking Laurie's writing class? She is a local girl and I've always thought about taking her in-person class nearby, but an online class would be so much easier. Would love to hear your thoughts.

I love all the exciting things you have planned this year! My heart is with you as you invite these things into your life.

    1. Thank you, Wendy! I keep thinking I'm better then...realize I'm not, really! Eek! It will get there in the end, I'm sure.

I'm so sorry re: your asthma bout! That is scary, I am sure!! I hope you start feeling better very soon, Wendy.

I'm looking forward to diving in more with The Gifts of Imperfection. In fact, I was inspired to buy it after seeing your widget of books you love on your blog!!

Laurie's online class is really quite incredible so far: lots of digging deep. AH! (Scared-y cat look.) I will let you know as it progresses. :)

Thank you for all of your lovely words. :)

  7. My goodness, you've been through a lot, going through a lot and plan to do a lot!!! I have loved meeting you in 2012 and now reading this you I am going to be meeting you again on Creative Courage. I did it last year and it was wonderful, a real creative focus for me. A highlight in the year. I love your goals to write 2-4 poems a month, finish a couple draft children's picture books and practice daily self-care. I would love to hear what you think of "The Highly Sensitive Child" too. Wow, you are a creative super power and a delight to get to know. Happy Happy 2013!! :)

    1. Hi Suzi!

Thank you for stopping by. :)

I loved meeting you in 2012, too. I am *super excited* that we will both be on Creative Courage together! YAY! So great!

The Highly Sensitive Child is quite good, actually, and I'm learning a lot about my daughter, even though I'm a HSP! I recommend it. :) I bought Quiet, on your recommendation, but haven't started reading it yet. :)

      Happy 2013 to you, too!!!

  9. Hi Becky! I love this breakdown! For self care I want to try giving up sugar again. I did it in the past and loved the benefits. We will see though. ;) I can't wait to see all of the wonderful things I know you will achieve this year and off into the future! Blessings, health, and fun to you and yours this year! I am so glad we met in class and that I have an exciting friend like you! Hugs Karrlin

    1. Hi KarrlIN! Thank you!!!

I think you are SUPER brave to try to give up sugar. I'm not sure I've ever actually - with a direct intention - tried to give sugar up! What kind of benefits did you get?

I am so grateful we met in this class, too. You are a bright ray of sunshine!
