  1. Hi Becky,

I tried that google group you suggested, but can seem to find it...could you tell me the name again?

  3. Hi Amanda,
It's possible that the expat group I mentioned to you is closed for membership now; very soon, a new website called What's On Yangon will be launched. In fact, if you google it, you may find the site (I'm not sure the date of the soft launch yet as I am traveling at the moment). It will have everything - and more - that the email group had, but much more user friendly since it will be a website.

In the meantime, if you have any questions, please let me know. I have pretty spotchy internet service (up in some rural areas of Myanmar) until Sunday. :)

  4. Oh my, just found your site. I live in southern China, am traveling with my 3 kids (hubby still has to work) to Myanmar next week for 13 days. So excited! Flying in to Mandalay, so won't visit Yangon - gotta limit the traveling to keep the kids happy, and budget won't allow for domestic flights - so I'm eagerly doing all my research for our trip!!! I look forward to looking through your blog - first blush, looks awesome!!!!

  5. hi! i'm planning to go to myanmar next month, but it is still not clear about how to deal with money... i read that there are atm's now, but what about using dollars to pays instead of kyat?! can u help me?! thank u!

    1. Hello,
So sorry for the delay in writing back. It's still primarily a cash economy here, so the best bet is to bring in lots of crisp, clean USD$ with you. Be sure there are absolutely no creases or any marks on the dollars whatsoever. That means no writing (you'd be surprised how many have marks/writing on them) and no-no-no little black spots on the top of the bills (some of them have this weird mark on the top and those won't get accepted). From there, then cnce you arrive, you could either pay most places with USD or you can convert to kyat. IT is true there are some ATMs available where you can withdraw kyat, but it's best to rely on cash.

      Hope this helps! :)

    2. Becky, bought your book, very helpful. Just landed in yangon today, went to both monument and Sharkys, neither had the Golden Guide, and both said they had no idea when the next batch would be in. Any thoughts on where/how else I might be able to get my hands on a copy? Thanks for all the help!

  7. Hi Becky,
Is your guide Yangon-centric? We are heading up to Mandalay soon and I was wondering if your e-guide would also have stuff relevant to Mandalay? Thanks!

    1. Hi,
Thanks for stopping by. Yes, the guide is very Yangon-centric, I'm afraid (in terms of my experiences and also the resources in the book); however, I think some of the resources in the back of the eBook would still be very applicable to you - particularly the packing lists and Myanmar information (books, films, etc.). There is also a lot of links to websites which would help you, and where to hook-up with others living in Myanmar. :)

  9. This is a recommendation specifically for Sanjib Adhikari Independent trekking guide tour Operator based in Kathmandu, Nepal) My partner and I had chosen to trek the Annapurna Circuit for 18 days in Feb end 2014 and as we were new to the region and high altitude in general we were not going to attempt this without a guide. After trawling online forums (including here) for recommendations and requesting recommendations from family and friends back home who do have some experience we posted out requests for information to 3 or 4 of the most promising reviewed individual guides, this included Sanjib Adhikari responded promptly with the most comprehensive and detailed response we receivewe did attempt to cross the pass before the snow grew too deep. A couple of hours in and with the knowledge of how long we had to go the other side of the pass, Sanjib made the call to turn around and return to our last camp (High Camp). The snow worsened and we were safely backe in camp as it continued through the whole day and essentially snowed us in. Sanjib advised we wait another day to see what the weather does and sure enough, the sky cleared and we partnered up with several small trekking groups and crossed the high pass together in one large party with the guides including Sanjib taking turns to break the snow at the front. We did make it over in the end and we had a very tough and memorable trip with plenty of stories to tell. I would certainly choose Sanjib again for a trek in Nepal and I would recommend that you add him to any list of initial enquiries for a Nepal Trek to compare the responses and prices with others.

  10. Hi Becky,

My family is moving to Yangon in a couple of weeks. I downloaded your book and found it very helpful. I would like to know whether you have any ideas regarding how to get a nanny. I have 6-weeks old twin daughters and will require help as soon as I arrive as my husband will be working and you need 2 pairs of hands when dealing with twins. Would you have any ideas on how to hire a nanny that speaks English. All the help is much appreciated! My email is mzcifuentes@gmail.com in case you can send me any info there.

    Best regards, Mariana
